The School

A new and much needed educational provision for 80-100 pupils, designed specifically for children and young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN).

A quiet and calm environment, with well-designed outdoor spaces to provide regular interaction with the natural environment, will allow the pupils to thrive, significantly improving emotional and physical wellbeing.

To complement and preserve the existing streetscape along Newgatestreet Road, the school will be thoughtfully designed to look and feel like a home. Taking inspiration from the Listed properties nearby characterised by tiled pitched roofs with rendered, brick and timber weatherboarded facades.

Key Features:

Enclosed Site
The school will be separated from the new housing development by a dense strip of native planting, creating a private and enclosed space

Vehicle Access
Convenient access points to site will ensure safe pedestrian/cycle access without detrimental impact on traffic flow.

Building Design
The school will feature well-proportioned teaching spaces within a low-rise layout. A 2-storey main building will be positioned away from neighbouring properties, while single-storey buildings at the rear will help minimise any potential impact on nearby homes

Central Courtyard
Classrooms will be arranged around an external courtyard, designed as a vibrant hub for activities, play, learning, and dining

Covered Walkway
A sheltered walkway will provide protected access between spaces, supported by timber columns that create a serene, cloister-like environment

Outdoor Spaces
The design incorporates diverse outdoor areas, offering both formal and informal settings for learning, play, and recreation

Sustainability Features
Buildings are oriented to maximise natural solar gains, and rooftop photovoltaic (PV) panels will generate renewable energy on-site

Addressing Climate Goals
We are targeting net zero in operation for the proposed school, supporting sustainable development and actively tackling the climate agenda.

It is proposed that the SEN school will be built before the residential elements of the scheme due to the urgent need for such provision.
